Which neighborhoods in Wellington are the most child-friendly, where you see school-age children playing together outside? Also, since NZ has a law where kids under 14 should always be supervised, does this mean that parents are always chained to their children when they go out and play? I would really like to know how this works. Thanks!

ooh, um, if u like lots of hills, earthquakes and crazy winds, then live in wellington. Auckland is better though. the law means that no kid aged under 14 can be left alone at home, otherwise they are with someone or in eye distance of an adult when in public.

Wellington is actualy ranked the best place in NZ for familys. Well first that comes to mind is Khandallah, well because i was brought up here it's certainly one of the safest and nicest! Johnsonville is also a good suburb.. They're near schools. I have a primary school few minutes walk away, and a bus stop also a few mins away, train station 10mins away, intermediate and college 25mins walk away. But if you decided to school in town they can easily catch train/bus. They could play at the local school.. and park. Houses around here usualy have good yards, mine is huge. Our house is up a big path far away from the street. Also in my street there is lots of little kids, the houses closer to the road i always see playing outside. So i suggest Khandallah or even Johnsonville. which is the suburb next door. Also they're betwen Porirua, the Inner city and Lower hutt, so you won't have to drive to far for shopping or work, etc. And for the law.. I would say basicaly means you're with them and have your eye on them, so that you're aware that they're not wondeirng off, or getting them self in danger and that they're safe and you do not leave them home alone or even alone in a car.. etc.

Love the Ngaio croften Downs area next to Khandallah. Yes your children can play outside. Visit the ngaio school. You will find happy healthy children there. Ngaio is only about 10 minutes away from Wellington Central and can be a little shelterd from those terrible winds Wellington gets. If you don't mind being out a little then Rhaumati Paraparaumu are lovely areas always a little warmer there. .

The neighbourhood around Khandallah is reportedly a pretty safe one, but I can't help you with the rest of your question.

Another suburb which hasn't been mentioned is Whitby, out in Porirua (they wish they weren't part of it). Almost zero crime rate, but somewhat on the expensive side. As for supervision, it's more to do with babysitting. Kids are allowed out, to the park, ride their bikes, etc without an adult being there.

I agree with Proud NZer, Wellington is rated the best area. I live in Titahi Bay which is just outside Welly and the roads, parks, beach etc is awesome. Kids are always out riding bikes, skateboards etc. It's a real Walker-friendly place. Schools and public transport are all close too. I lived in Johnsonville for many years and found that area to be just the same. So I would recommend Welly!! Parents don't have to be chained to their under 14 kids...just don't leave them at home by themselves.
