Scary: LONDON (AFP) - Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real. The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth. And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist. Three percent thought Charles Dickens, one of Britain's most famous writers, is a work of fiction himself. Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi and Battle of Waterloo victor the Duke of Wellington also appeared in the top 10 of people thought to be myths. Meanwhile, 58 percent thought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Holmes actually existed; 33 percent thought the same of W. E. Johns' fictional pilot and adventurer Biggles.

Not really, that's just people not knowing enough about history. You want to see some retarded people? Look at the statistics of how many Americans don't accept evolution.

Wow. It is the same kind of thinking. It is scary.

No. This is just result of a poor educational system that I believe is primarily secular in nature. Has nothing to do with religion.

Excellent question, never thought about that before. I would agree.

there was a time when the stupid people where how to say this nicely culled from the population by there own stupidity and nature. Now technology has allowed stupid people to live a breed. So people with no commonsense are allowed to live.

Sounds like the sort of thinking that results in Atheism. Real people and real events are reduced to fiction by people who can't see anything beyond the end of their own nose.

Did it mention who were polled? It seems to me that the British educational system (whether private or public) is failing its students and graduates in the area of history and literature. I don't think it has anything to do with the beginnings of a religious movement or the organization of a "new" religion.

With Reagan and Thatcher there was a real push from the conservatives to weaken education. It was cut and reduced to the point that most people no longer have the ability to figure out what the truth is. Dumb people are easy to control. The continued push for Religion into Govt in the USA is part of the same effort.
