Best place to live in Wellington

Best place to live in Wellington?
Hi there. I'm in the USA and we are moving to Wellington, NZ with hubby's work. I have never lived there before. I have two primary school aged children and I would ideally like to get them into a good school while living in a safe community. We love the outdoors - parks, beaches so any advice would be great. We don't cope that well with the cold since we've spent 4 winters out of NZ so are there different climates in Wellington? We will have to live in the Upper Hutt for a couple of months and then we would look at buying in an ideal location but my children will have to be enrolled before we leave the States. Unbiased opinions would be great ...

I lived in Korokoro, in the hills by Lower Hutt when I was primary school aged. It really was great. I lived in a great house, right past my fence was this huge park, so I had plenty of room to run around in. My street had many other kids, and I made great friends. And a great view! Try korokoro, or Normandale too, it's great.

I would recommend Island Bay, Lyall Bay, Miramar, Johnsonville and Tawa. Areas that I would not live in would be Porirua and Naenae.

Ngaio . I was bought up n Ngaio many years ago. I now live in Australia but last year I returned and I visited 2 schools near Wellington. The Ngaio school children where all well dressed and extremely healthy looking lovely good children . I spoke with a couple of the teachers . They where all very very nice. I felt proud I had been to that school . I also visited another school in a different area the children where sloppy the atmosphere was not of the same standard as Ngaio, Ngaio is only a 15 minute train ride from Wellington . It has a bit of protection from the hills from those awful cold winds that Wellington gets. I love Wellington as I have some very fond memories of there but I choose not to live in such a cold wet place now I'm getting older. If you are prepared to go further out from the City then Rhaumati beach is very nice but the roads can get very busy driving into Wellington at peak times. Although Wellington harbor is lovely I wouldn't want to live to near as some freezing winds come through there .

Island bay is supreme family Suburb, it has a village with all nesessities. Its a beach suburb with lots of parks and great schools. Wellington is can get very windy and the weather changes alot. it is almost summer and gets nice and warm but it'll still rain and be cold. i suggest to stock up on winter stuff.

I really dont like Upper hutt at all its such a boring place to live. Lower Hutt is awesome place to live because its not right in wellington itself but close enough. and has the great Queensgate mall, and the schools are good there also. My father in law lives in Kelson, lower hutt. which is really nice, mother in law lives in Wainuiomata, which is probably not the best place to live as its quite rough area. and i would definatly NOT entertain Porirua or Tawa. but thats my opinion. once your over there you will soon know where the best parts are going to be
